Musical Theatre: An Ancient Art

Musical theatre, or musicals, have been traced back to over 2,500 years ago in ancient Greece. It combines dancing, singing, and acting in front of an audience. It’s been documented that the ancient Greeks performed different genres of musicals ranging from comedies to tragedies. Humans throughout history have always loved different forms of entertainment and these performances helped them to temporarily escape into a fictional world.

Over time, musical theater evolved and eventually was performed by Romans. They began to use music from an orchestra to sing songs and do dance routines. In the 12th and 13th centuries, churches in several countries used musicals to express their devotion and love to their religion. This helped strengthen people’s faith as well as provide fun and entertaining depictions of their beliefs.
